Bedford 50 Years Ago
The Architecture of a Country Town

Victor Farrar with Peter Boon Paul Middleton and Richard Wildman

Bedford 50 Years Ago is based on a thesis written in 1957 by the late Victor Farrar, when he was qualifying as an architect. He was keen to show that Bedford possessed many fine buildings which grew out of the town's historical development. Victor identified and deplored the threat of 'architectural hooliganism' which he feared would destroy parts of this heritage. Valuable insights are provided into the architecture of the county town half a century ago, enhanced by the author's previously unpublished photographs.

1938 Travels in France and Geneva

The Journal of Mildred Ethel Lindsay

Mildred Lindsay was 58 years old and her daughter Margaret 17, when Margaret was invited to stay with the Comte and Comtesse Cibein in their chateau near Lyons in order to improve her French.

The trip was organised by Mildred’s French friends Mr and Mrs de Guingand who lived close by in Croydon. Mildred decided to go on a tour of eastern and southern France during that April of 1938, and it is her Journal that is reproduced here in this booklet.

Her words paint a picture of life in this part of France during the year preceding the beginning of the Second World War.
